The Elephants are cultural icon of Sinhalese culture over two thousands years and today Elephants are became key wildlife attraction in Sri Lanka. Today the elephant population in Sri Lanka is mainly restricted to east, southeast and north dry zone areas in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Elephant are fall under Asian elephants, there are 3 sub spices of elephants category under Asian elephants there are Indian, Sri Lankan and Sumatran. out of that Sri Lankan elephant is much darkest in skin color and physically largest mammal.

Places to see Elephants in Sri Lanka

There are few sanctuaries to explore elephants in Sri Lanka. These all are National Park and Safari in these jungles will gives you better experience to witness natural habitat of these giants.

Among the above National parks Udawalawe National park is guaranteed place to witness the elephants gathering throughout the year, it was identified that Udawala has highest elephant density in Asia.

Minneriya National Park is become a Paradise for Photographers and wild life lovers in the world due to during the dry season tourist are able to witness the large number of elephant gathering in Minneriya, further it famous as largest Elephants gathering location in Asia. There is about 300 Elephants are coming to Minneriya during the dry season from North Central Province.
